came across a $3,000 Alexis Bittar mask. It was made of leather and
covered
adorned with Swarovski crystals, so leather and glass for $3,000! I thought
,
there
is no
aren’t any real precious materials in it, and I could
make one
create something just as cool for much
cheaper
less.
So
Thus, it
was
became more of a project born out of
being cheap
frugality than anything else. The Bittar mask was
amazing
stunning and resembled an Aztec death mask.
For
mine
my version, I used vinyl and foam to
make
create a comfortable base. I
used stain
incorporated stained glass wire to
give it
provide a more rigid shape. The original mask was
based
inspired more
on
by a
greek
Greek drama mask and
had
featured a bottom jaw that allowed me to
talk
speak. It
looked
had a very creepy appearance.
I decided this look needed to
go clubbing
hit the club scene, so I built a
helmut off of
helmet from the mask to
make it
cover my
whole
entire head. The "jewels" were glued on one by one with E6000 (learn it and learn it well!). I also added some latex deer antlers I found in a costume shop. They were painted black to match the base vinyl and also
bejeweled
adorned with jewels. The
bejeweling
embellishment process was the longest part, taking several weeks
of adding
to add each gem
one by one
individually and letting the glue set.
One
Once it was
done
complete, I coated the
whole thing in
entire piece with several layers of acrylic epoxy resin.
